1865 Norway

 In 1865, Ole Peter Hansen, great-grandfather of Berger Morud, lived in Ringsaker, Norway. This December 1865 Census report captures that moment in time (see last four rows) when he lived with his wife, Anne Hansdatter, and two of his children, Andreas and Nekoline. Berger’s grandfather, Hans Olsen, was already 30 and living on his own on the Enger farm in Ringsaker. 

Notice the Norwegian naming convention of the time, where each child’s surname is their father’s first name followed by either “sen” (son) or “datter” (daughter). Thus, Hans Olsen was the son of Ole Peter and had the surname “Olsen”.

It would Hans Olsen’s son, Ole, who was born five years earlier on the Maurud farm in Ringsaker, which gave us that family name.
